Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík, which is home to over 65% of the population. Iceland is the only part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands.
Economy: It is small and subject to high volatility. In 2011, GDP was US$12 billion, but by 2018 it had increased to a nominal GDP of US$27 billion. With a population of 350,000, this is $55,000 per capita, (PPP) estimates. The financial crisis of 2007–2010 a decline in GDP and employment that has since been reversed entirely by a recovery aided by a tourism boom starting in 2010.
