It is an overseas collectivity of France in the Caribbean. It is often abbreviated to St. Barth in French, and St. Barts in English. The island lies about 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of the Caribbean island Saint Martin, and is northeast of the Dutch islands of Saba, Sint Eustatius, and the Country of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The economy of the island is based on tourism and duty-free retail. The official currency of St. Barthélemy is the euro. International investment and the wealth generated by tourists explain the high standard of living on the island. Most of the food  is imported from the United States or France. Tourism attracts about 200,000 visitors every year. As a result, there is a boom in house building activity catering to the tourists and also to the permanent residents of the island
