known previously as the Union Islands, and, until 1976, known officially as the Tokelau Islands is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It consists of three tropical coral atolls: Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo. The capital rotates yearly among the three atolls. In addition to these three, Swains Island, which forms part of the same archipelago, is the subject of an ongoing territorial dispute; it is currently administered by the US

Its annually exports around US$100,000 of stamps, copra and woven and carved handicrafts and imports over US$300,000 of foodstuffs, building materials, and fuel to, and from, New Zealand.It also pays directly for the cost of medical and education  services. Industries include small-scale enterprises for copra production, wood work, plaited craft goods, stamps, coins, and fishing. Agriculture and livestock produces coconuts, copra, breadfruit, papayas, bananas, figs, pigs, poultry and a few goats
