The territories controlled by the ROC consist of 168 islands. The main island of Taiwan, also known as Formosa, with mountain ranges dominating the eastern two-thirds and plains in the western third, where its highly urbanised population is concentrated. The capital, Taipei, forms along with New Taipei City and Keelung the largest metropolitan area of Taiwan. Other major cities include Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. Taiwan has been settled for at least 25,000 years

As of 2021, the three highest paid sectors in Taiwan include telecommunication service, financial  services and information service. With the technocracy-centered economic planning until 1987, real growth in GDP has averaged about 8% during the past three decades. Exports have grown since World War II, with inflation and unemployment staying low
