It is part of the Southern Cone region of South America. Uruguay has a population of an estimated 3.51 million, of whom 2 million live in the metropolitan area of its capital and largest city, Montevideo. It was first inhabited by groups of hunter –gatherers 13,000 years ago. The predominant tribe at the moment of the arrival of Europeans was the Charrúa people, when the Portuguese first established Colónia do Sacramento in 1680. It won its independence between 1811 and 1828
Economy:
It features an export-oriented agricultural sector and a well-educated workforce, along with high levels of social spending. Tourism and banking are also important sectors; Uruguay acts as a regional hub for international finance and tourism.  The country also has a history and representation of advanced workers-rights protection, with unions and the eight-hour work-day protected at the beginning of the 20th century. Though 90% of the country's population is urbanized
